Vox | “Be Afraid, yet Don’t Fear”

In this passage from Luke 12:1-12, the Lord Jesus Christ deals with the subject of fear. The godless have every reason to wake up and be afraid—very afraid!—since they are living on heavily borrowed time. But even true followers of Jesus should beware of letting fear take over, because that very fear can turn God into their enemy. And yet, God’s children have no reason to be afraid of anything in this world, if they only trust Jesus and reject all fear of man.

Are you afraid? Of what—and why? Or are you content, without a care in the world when you should really be alarmed?

Baptism is a sacrament of the New Testament, ordained by Jesus Christ,a not only for the solemn admission of the party baptized into the visible Church,b but also to be unto him a sign and seal of the covenant of grace,c of his ingrafting into Christ,d of regeneration,e of remission of sins,f and of his giving up unto God, through Jesus Christ, to walk in newness of life:g which sacrament is, by Christ’s own appointment, to be continued in his Church until the end of the world.h

Los Cánones de Dort (1619), 1.1-3

CAPÍTULO PRIMERO

DE LA DOCTRINA DE LA ELECCIÓN DIVINA Y LA REPROBACIÓN.

Enseñanza sobre la predestinación divina, la cual el Sínodo declara que es conforme a la Palabra de Dios, aceptada hasta ahora por las Iglesias reformadas y presentada en varios artículos.

ARTÍCULO I.

Puesto que todos los hombres han pecado en Adán y se han hecho reos de maldición y muerte eterna, Dios no habría hecho injusticia a nadie si hubiese querido dejar a todo el género humano en el pecado y en la maldición, y condenarlo a causa del pecado, según estas expresiones del Apóstol: “para que toda boca se calle y todo el mundo sea hecho responsable ante Dios”; “ por cuanto todos pecaron y no alcanzan la gloria de Dios” (Romanos 3:19,23); y, “porque la paga del pecado es muerte” (Romanos 6:23).

ARTÍCULO II.

Pero en esto se manifestó el amor de Dios: en que Dios ha enviado a su Hijo unigénito al mundo, para que todo aquel que en Él cree, no se pierda, mas tenga vida eterna. (1 Juan 4:9; Juan 3:16).

ARTÍCULO III.

A fin de que los hombres sean traídos a la fe, Dios, en su misericordia, envía mensajeros de esta buena nueva a quienes le place y cuando le place, por cuyo ministerio los hombres son llamados al arrepentimiento y a la fe en el Cristo crucificado. “¿Cómo, pues, invocarán a aquel en quien no han creído? ¿Y cómo creerán en aquel de quien no han oído? ¿Y cómo oirán sin haber quien les predique? ¿Y cómo predicarán si no son enviados?” (Romanos 10:14, 15).

The Marks of the Church

If you move to a new town, you have to find a new church. The search for a new church can be difficult and frustrating. If you pick up the Yellow Pages and look under “church,” you are likely to confront a bewildering array of possibilities. Perhaps you already have some fairly definite ideas of what you want in a church. You may be looking for a good youth group or active senior citizens group. You may want a powerful preacher or a certain kind of music. You may be very loyal to one denomination or you may like to “shop around.”

What should you be looking for in choosing a new church? Your first concern should be that the church be a “true church.” You do not want to choose a church that is part of a sect or a cult. You do not want a church that still bears the name of church, but whose lampstand Christ has removed (Rev. 1–3). How do you recognize a true church? This question was acute at the time of the Reformation. The Roman Catholic Church in the sixteenth century basically argued that Christ preserved the true church through the work of the pope, the bishop of Rome. The true church is easy to recognize because it is in fellowship with the pope. Any church that does not submit to the pope is a false church.

Los Cánones de Dort (1619), 1.8-11

ARTÍCULO VIII.

La elección de todos aquellos que se salvan no es múltiple, sino una sola y la misma, tanto en el Antiguo como en el Nuevo Testamento, pues la Escritura enseña que el beneplácito, el propósito y el consejo de la voluntad de Dios es uno, según el cual nos escogió desde la eternidad tanto para la gracia, como para la gloria, así para la salvación, como para el camino de la salvación, “las cuales Dios preparó de antemano para que anduviéramos en ellas” (Efesios 1:4-5 y 2:10).

ARTÍCULO IX.

Esta elección fue hecha, no en virtud de previsión de la fe,la obediencia de la fe, la santidad ni ninguna otra buena cualidad o disposición, como causa o condición, previamente requeridas en el hombre que habría de ser elegido, sino para la fe y la obediencia de la fe, para la santidad, etc. Por lo tanto, la elección es la fuente de todo bien salvífico de la cual proceden la fe, la santidad y otros dones salvíficos y, finalmente, la vida eterna misma, conforme al testimonio del Apóstol: “según nos escogió en Él antes de la fundación del mundo, (no porque éramos, sino) para que fuéramos santos y sin mancha delante de Él” (Efesios 1:4).

ARTÍCULO X.

La causa de esta misericordiosa elección es únicamente el beneplácito de Dios, el cual no consiste en que Él escogió como condición de la salvación, de entre todas las posibles condiciones, algunas cualidades o acciones humanas, sino en que Él adoptó como un pueblo especial para Sí a algunas personas determinadas de entre la común muchedumbre de pecadores. Como está escrito “(porque aún cuando los mellizos no habían nacido, y no habían hecho nada, ni bueno ni malo, para que el propósito de Dios conforme a su elección permaneciera, no por las obras, sino por aquel que llama), se le dijo a ella —esto es, a Rebeca—: El mayor servirá al menor. Tal como está escrito: A Jacob amé, pero a Esaú aborrecí” (Romanos 9:11-13); “y creyeron cuantos estaban ordenados a vida eterna” (Hechos 13:48).

ARTÍCULO XI.

Y como Dios mismo es sumamente sabio, inmutable, omnisciente y todopoderoso, así la elección hecha por Él no puede ser anulada ni cambiada ni revocada ni destruida, ni los escogidos pueden ser reprobados ni su número disminuido.

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

The light of nature & necessity of Scripture
