“Behold, thy Son! … Behold, thy Mother!”
John 19:25-27, “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.”
This sermon was preached at our last observance of the Lord’s Supper on August 3, 2025. To learn more about the historic, Reformed and Presbyterian practice of Communion, listen to the final three messages of this series.

The bloody exchange: Judas betrays Jesus
Let the ‘Prophet’ prophesy!
Matthew 26:67-68, “Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands, saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?”
Calvin: “The object of all these expressions of contempt was, to show that nothing was more unlikely than that he should be a prince of prophets, who, in consequence of being blindfolded, was not able even to ward off blows. But this insolence was turned by the providence of God to a very different purpose; for the face of Christ, dishonored by spitting and blows, has restored to us that image which had been disfigured, and almost effaced, by sin.”

“El Supremo Valor de Conocer a Cristo”
An excellent sermon by my pastor friend in Egg Harbor Township, Pr. Lucrecio Muñoz:
The irony of the solders’ abuse
Mark 14:60-65, “And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing [Do you not respond]? what is it which these witness against thee? But he held his peace [remained silent], and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent [tore] his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses? Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.”
The cross: debt discharged
III. Christ, by his obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all those that are thus justified, and did make a proper, real, and full satisfaction to his Father’s justice in their behalf.a Yet inasmuch as he was given by the Father for them,b and his obedience and satisfaction accepted in their stead,c and both freely, not for anything in them, their justification is only of free grace;d that both the exact justice and rich grace of God might be glorified in the justification of sinners.e
