In this passage from 1 Samuel in the Old Testament, we have the account of God’s people being soundly defeated by their enemies in battle . . . twice! And they lost the second time, even though they had brought with them the “ark of the LORD,” the sacred chest symbolizing God’s gracious presence. But in vain did they presume on God’s favor. God is not mocked, and He won’t stay in anyone’s “pocket.”
